We recently had the pleasure of visiting Mt Difficulty Winery, and it was a truly delightful experience. The winery is renowned for its stunning location and exceptional wines, and we can certainly see why.
Mt Difficulty’s story began in the early 1990s, when a group of vineyard owners in Bannockburn decided to collaborate and produce wine under a single label. Their first vintage was in 1998, featuring Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago, a region known for its unique terroir and climate, which are particularly well-suited to Pinot Noir. The area experiences hot summers, a large diurnal temperature variation, and long, cool autumns.
Mt Difficulty has grown to encompass several vineyards in Central Otago, and they are known for producing a range of wines, including:
The winery is committed to a philosophy of ethical viticulture and minimal intervention, allowing the wines to express the unique characteristics of the Bannockburn region. Some of their notable wines include their single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, which showcase the distinct qualities of specific vineyard sites. They also produce a popular “Roaring Meg” label, which offers fruit-driven wines.
Our visit included a wine tasting, where we sampled some of their acclaimed wines. We also enjoyed a platter, which perfectly complemented the wines. The combination of the beautiful scenery, the delicious food and wine, and the welcoming atmosphere made for a memorable afternoon.
