The first general store to be established in Te Atatu was owned by a Mr Illingsworth. Back in the day, a general store wasn’t just a place to get supplies, it served as a meeting place for the locals.

By the 1930s, the area saw significant infrastructural developments. Roads were improved, enhancing connectivity for residents and supporting the growing community’s needs while tying it closer to Auckland.

By the 1930’s the peninsula community grew to 50 houses, along with a hall, a school and a church. Mr Illingsworth added post office facilities and a petrol pump to the store and it remained at the heart of community life.

Just like Mr Illingsworth, this Gastro Pub is all about community. When you’re going past next why not stop in and grab a drink or a bite to eat, it might be your new local?

Very disappointing experience today. There was a miscommunication about the food and a stupid amount of food was accidentally ordered for only 10 people - instead of double checking they went through with the order. My sister was upset due to this miscommunication as it was very costly and the worker chose to smirk and laugh at her instead of provide a solution and chose to further antagonise her. The worker confronted her (my underage sister and not the adults) with the food order to say ‘I’m right you’re wrong’ which is not what we were saying at all. Food was oily, over salted and much of it was cold by the time it came out - there were only a handful of tables there. The food also didn’t come out at the same time and food came out before the drinks. We’ve come here so many times over the years, but this is disappointing. They also didn’t have several options of drinks available. They also made us package up all the over ordered food instead of taking it back to the kitchen and doing it there.

The young man we had as the waiter is a natural host. Good banter and great service
